What Your Social Network Profile Photo Should Never Be

It’s pretty much a requirement to have a good profile photo. Most people, though, put up some bland head shot of themselves. Or, worse, they use something completely inappropriate. Here are a few things you should avoid in social network profile shots:

1. Boring. Unless you’re on LinkedIn and selling your services, your profile shot shouldn’t be you sitting in a suit in front of a white background. That’s essential for some people but for the rest of us it’s boring or pretentious. And if you really want to have some fun, how about cartooning yourself or adding a ribbon for your favorite cause?

2. Stolen. Putting up a picture of a hot celeb and claiming it’s you? Fun, right? No. You will be caught. At best, you will be mocked profoundly. At worst, you may find yourself being sued by said hot celebrity’s very expensive lawyers.

3. Naked. Should be taken as read. Naked shots of ordinary people never look good anyway. Sexy isn’t bad, but acting like a foreign porn star is going to get you a big ‘Suspended’ mark on your account.

4. Badly taken. That blurred web cam shot isn’t a good effect. It just makes you look like you can’t take photos to save your life. Which might well be true but is it really something you want the world to know? Surely you have a friend who can take a picture of you?

5. Changed every day. It’s tempting but if you keep changing it then people are just going to end up dizzy. Get a good one and stick to it.

6. Cut off. It happens. Every day there are people on Facebook who have apparently failed to notice that the top of their head is not in their profile picture. It’s usually the fault of their silly cropping software but it’s another thing that makes you look like a lousy photographer.
